Mary's Driving School Student Reviews

Completed the lessons a few months ago and here is my full experience with Mary’s Driving school.

Pros –

1.) Easy in-class work, although painfully repetitive.

2.) She’s been friendly with me.

3.) Low costs. You get what you pay for.

Cons – oh dear... let me list them.

1.) you get five “two” hour lessons. If you’re lucky. She’ll sometimes show up late, stall writing long notes, make you read outdated notes, etc. What was supposed to be a two hour lesson can easily become a 1.5 hour driving lesson. She makes you sign off your time at the beginning, so if you didn’t get your two hours you’re out of luck.

2.) VERY outdated work and video material. Be prepared to step into the late eighties, early 90’s when you go in-class. Some of the sheets look like they were taken from an old sunken pirate ship.

3.) stories, and gossip. Of course, anyone likes to hear stories and gossip, but within good taste. Be prepared to hear long talks about the latest gossip on past or current students that really should be kept private. You’ll hear this during driving lessons, where it doesn’t teach you squat about driving. Do not tell her anything about your private life, because she will most likely tell someone else.

4.) She has a large ego. It’s great to have pride in yourself, but to put down other driving schools and people is really in bad taste as a person and unprofessional as a business.

5.) Fake online reviews by the same person. I spent one night(after I finished my course), curious on what the reviews were for this school. I noticed the 5-star rating reviews (which most seem to be posted in November so far) have common spelling errors, double spacing, overuse of caps, and so on. Meaning it’s all done by the same person. This can be checked by anyone online.

6.) She will push you to get through your driving courses as fast as possible whether you like it or not. She’ll complain that she can’t pay her bills if you cancel. Forgetting this is a common thing with business’ that deal with clients. If I cancel a Dentist appointment, they’d never complain in such a poor manner. Considering how the classroom hasn’t been updated in decades, I highly doubt she has trouble with her bills.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope this is helpful for someone wanting to find a serious driving school. No driving school is perfect, but there may be better choices. I went with another driving school for extra lessons to get my G2 and I’m soooo grateful I did. It was more teaching and less wasting time.

I will repost this to other review sites.

I was new to the province and I found mary's driving school online. I called and asked for the schedule and price and so i joined.
I thoroughly enjoyed the program called CPD Jettala curriculum. I was taught a lot and worked in groups and worked with a partner as well as the movies that went with the cirriculum. It was by far a positive learning experience.
The in car lessons started a few days after, I was new to the road and had never driven before so of course I was very nervous on my first lesson. Mary explained thoroughly what we were going to be covering that day and made me feel at ease.
When came to learning parallel and reverse parking, that was very difficult for me. Mary showed me step by step and guided me close by to teach me proper and safe technique.
I was happy to see Mary for each lesson because she was very patient with me not like my dad who made me very nervous and unsure behind the wheel. Mary definitely made me feel at ease and made me feel very comfortable behind the wheel as a new driver.
I passed my G2 test on my first try with a 98%. And now im driving everyday to school.
I would like to take the time to thank Mary for her hard work, dedication and patience in teaching me how to drive. You made my learning experience such a positive one and i would recommend Mary to any new driver out there and i always mention Mary to my family and friends. Your a wonderful teacher Mary! A HUGE THANK YOU!
I will always remember Mary's words "Get the Big Picture!" :) Your the best.

Just terrible. Avoid at all costs. She will try to get more money out of you one way or another. I should have checked the Better Business Bureau before signing up. Getting into a car with her was pure torture. by B Carrot posted on Saturday, January 28, 2012

I was new the province. After searching and searching and doing my research about driving schools, i found Marys Driving School. I called and spoke directly with Mary. She was polite and sincere as i told her i was quite nervous to get on the road. I attended her weekend class which she provided the JETTA curriculum. She made the classes comforting, easy to follow, and the videos were fun! if we ever had questions, she was always there with open ears and ready to answer and explain. Upon our first in car session, she showed me the car and made me feel comfortable. It was a pleasure hearing all her stories and jokes. She made it fun. By the end, i was comfortable and ready for my test. I passed and am now happy and feel safe to be on the road!

Thanks so much Mary for your time and dedication in working with me! by jennifer posted on Thursday, February 09, 2012
What a horrific experience. I have never dealt with such a dishonest business owner. She will demand more cash than the advertised price. She will not drop off and pick up anywhere in the region as advertised on the website. She is the only in car instructor so she is NOT flexible for in car sessions because she is often teaching classes and there are only so many hours in a day. She will refuse to pass you to get more money by making you take more in car sessions. Check out the complaints against her with the local Better Business Bureau. If you look at any of the positive reviews on other sites many are done on the same day...like she got her family together and they had a big "review writing" party. Buyer beware my friend, there is no value to be found in this business. by Missy posted on Saturday, February 18, 2012
My mother went to Mary's driving school 12 years ago. She enjoyed her experience, and trained with Mary all the way until she got her G licence. End of last year I needed practise for my G2, and despite what others may have told me, I trusted the positive review my mother had told me. I heard horror stories, but I learned they were all not true. I enjoyed every lesson with Mary, and there were no problems that I can think of. The in-class was informative, and the in-car lessons taught me many things that I will use for the rest of my life as a driver. For example, I was terrified to learn how to parallel and back pack as they are the most difficult things to learn for a new driver. With Mary's techniques, and teaching me step by step I can proudly say that I finally was able to do it. Importantly, the techniques I learned from Mary will keep me safe on the road as a defensive driver forever. Thank you Mary for helping me to obtain my licence. With the decades of experience that Mary holds, I will strongly recommend Mary's Driving School to all of my friends and family.

Mary is a their and a liar, she intimidated my child to go to the bank and get her 80 dollars for a canceled appointment. She should of come to me, my child did not sign any agreement with her for canceling appointments, nor did she give me any documentation supporting this, and yes when you cancel a Dr's appointment you should pay as the Dr is not charging it to OHIP but Mary in car lessons are part of a package so if my child misses one then so be it, but if she wants to make up that lesson then Mary has the right to charge for the extra lesson. How dare she think she has the right to hold my child until paid and also refuse to give the certificate at the end!i am going to the police about how she treated my child and will also report her to the ministry. People like her should never be allowed to work with people again. by jean posted on Tuesday, June 05, 2012
Mary gave me the confidence to go for my road tests - both the G1 exit and G2 exit. I passed both at first attempt. She is a good teacher and takes you through all the roads the examiner will take you. She is patient and flexible with timings. I had to change times with her a couple of times and she was very accommodating. by Swapna posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2012
I have read the reviews here and elsewhere about Mary's Driving School. All of her positive reviews they read very similarly and often contaian the same spelling mistakes. It is obvious Mary or her family are posting those reviews to make the driving school appear as a better choice for the new driver. After every negative review there is a positive review stating the exact opposite of the previous comments.
I had a horrible experience with Mary's driving school years ago. She spends more time parked in parking lots 'talking' and note taking. I did not fulfil my required driving time as per her certificate due to these 'talks'. She then wanted me to pay her extra for more lessons.
Now looking for my teenager I am shocked Mary is still in business. The better Business Bureau has numerous complaints on her business, several students have had to sue her to get money returned for lessons never given.
Shame on a school taking advantage of young people and basically holding them hostage to milk more money out of them and all they want to do is to get their DL.

There are many honest driving schools out there, but not at Mary's. by stephan posted on Friday, August 17, 2012

Worst experience ever - avoid at all costs. Pick ANY other driving school! This woman is the most unprofessional and rude person I have had to deal with. She preys on teenagers that she can get away with treating unfairly. I have filed a complaint against her with the Better Business Bureau. She should be shut down and her license taken away by Kelly posted on Wednesday, September 05, 2012
I only needed to rent a car from her for my G test, and maybe have one extra lesson with her to practice with her car.

I thought she was nice, though talked a bit too much (especially about other students and their life stories, which is definitely not her business to tell).

HOWEVER, she insisted that everything I was doing while driving was wrong, and that I'd instantly fail. I'd ask her to give me pointers, and teach me whatever it is that I'm doing wrong, but she barely explained anything.
She kept repeating that I would need an extra class before my exam (I'd learn later that she does this to get more money), I told her "I'll think about it". Later that night, I called to tell her I wouldn't take that extra lesson, because I'd be more comfortable with practising on my own time, and she threw a fit! Although I apologized, Mary kept going on and on about how I ruined her plans for the day. Her plan? She wanted me to practice with her early morning, DRIVE HER to her school in downtown Kitchener, and then drive back (on my own, in HER car) to the plaza and park it there until my test. I'm not sure if this is normal, but the idea that a driving school instructor would entrust me with her car for the entire day is a little troubling for me. And then when I told her I wouldn't do that, she asked if MY PARENTS could drive her to work.
Before I hung up, she asked me "Are you sure you don't want the extra lesson - oh but some students need to fail to learn." At that point, I was too angry with her to be scared into taking another lesson.
Overall, a VERY rude woman who's out there to get your money. by Bee posted on Sunday, September 09, 2012
I finally got my G2 after about a year with my G1. My sister and my dad both tried to teach me and they still didn't help me. I decided to go to Mary's Driving School during the summer because I NEEDED my G2 to drive to university every day. I got my G2 on the first try with only a few hours driving and passed with only one mistake. With the help from Mary and a few extra lessons than the original 5, I am now a G2 driver and don't have to take a bus everyday to school :)
THANK YOU! by Eliza posted on Sunday, September 09, 2012
Mary's driving school was an excellent driving school to attend! It was recommended to me by friends and family members and is one of the most affordable schools in the region. Mary is excellent at what she does and knows how to get things done! Her course consisted of 4 classroom sessions and 5 2hr in car sessions that I enjoyed very much. She was very clear with her instructions and expectations in the classroom and on the road and if u follow her instructions you will have no problems! I am happy to say that her in car sessions were great and helped improve my driving immensly. I am also proud to say that I completed her full course in 2 and a half weeks and passed my G2 on the first try with flying colors! Thanks again for all your help Mary! You are amazing at what you do:) by Emily posted on Tuesday, September 18, 2012
I'm so glad I went to Mary's Driving School! She is an excellent teacher who has amazing experience and prepares people well for their G2 test. In the summer, I called her driver's school to compare it to other schools I could attend but I decided to attend her school because she offered a low price and the same quality as the other schools. I spent 4 classroom sessions and 5 2hr in car sessions. She told some stories that helped me be more careful and get the big picture on the road. Mary is very enthusiastic and very clear with her instructions. She gave me many helpful tips when in the car and was patient with me. Mary prepared me so well that I passed my G2 test by the first try!
Thank you so much Mary!! I recommend you to everybody! by Natalie posted on Thursday, November 15, 2012
I will never ever recommand Mary's driving school to any of my friends, I had have the worst driving school with her, in two hours driving she spent one hour and a half in parking lot making you practice over and over a parking that normally took three minutes, talking, not focus at allin the student is doing, for her it is all about getting more money taking more and more money from you. She still owed me §20 because one day I didn't have change so she kept my money never gave it back to.
I lack of organization I cannot count the numerous times when I had to fill the same form because the paper are kept in such a way that she will never find the one that belongs to you, those who took road lessons whith her can testified how her car is a big mass, she should learn how to clen up her car.
So specially for newcomers with no car at home watch out your pocket and your time taking driving courses with Mary's driving school is a big time comsuption and money spend in a wrong wayso be advised people!!! by jennifer posted on Monday, December 17, 2012
Mary's driving school she is a big liar, unprofessional, gossip all the time never tell her the story of your life, she never picks up, she does not drop off, it is all about getting more and more money from you.

"Finally passed!"

I've been trying to pass my driving test for nearly 9 years, I am 55 years old! After 3 failed tests and 2 years of not driving I decided enough was enough! I signed up with Mary to do an intensive course! All I can say is that Mary is a great teacher, never patronises like other Instructors) your mistakes and clearly tells/shows you how to drive in a way that suits you! I can definitely say she tailors her lessons to the learner and is a great teacher! I have finally passed and couldn't of done it without Mary's guidance! sad I won't have lessons anymore but will be recommending Mary to other learners! Thanks for all your help! by Nancy posted on Saturday, January 12, 2013
It was BRUTAL! Please do not go to her anyone! She has no interest in teaching you how to drive, she is only after your money. She will make you stop at the bank during your first lesson in the car and make you give her full money. Every in car lesson she will park somewhere and make you take notes and fill out a form each time just to waste your time. So a two hour driving lesson will only be half an hour. She will not teach you the skills of how to park but she will do it herself and make it seem like you will never learn. She will gossip and complain about her life during each lesson. She will make you driving confidence low and make you feel like you will never learn how to drive. At the end she will not even give you the certificate unless you pay more money. In conclusion she is horrible and is just after your money. Don't be fooled by the low price she displays on her website because at the end you pay double that amount and you learn absolutely NOTHING. I am filing a complaint against her to the police and business bureau because what I went through with this lady I do not want anyone else to go through. I'm surprised no one has taken action against her because it is not even safe to be with driving with such a person. by Nargis posted on Monday, February 18, 2013
All of the negative reviews are correct. She will nickel-and-dime you for everything and will do anything to get you to buy more lessons. Very unprofessional. Avoid at all costs. by CJ posted on Thursday, March 07, 2013
Me and my husband are new immigrant in Canada, and my husband first found Mary’s driving school online. Since Mary has a low price he called her if she can give him just a few lessons and she agreed and he had only 2 lessons in the road with her. She is a good instructor she taught him the reverse parking, parallel parking, three point turn and some other things that he needed to learn. When my husband took his first road test he passed. Thanks to Mary for her patience and for helping my husband passed his G2 License. After that my husband enrolled me to Mary’s class since I don’t have much driving experience. I learned so much in the class especially how to be a defensive driver, she always tells “Get the big picture” and it really helps a lot. I had fear driving in the road thinking that I might involve in an accident but on my first in car lessons with Mary my confidence came back & I was able to drive confidently. When I started my reverse and parallel parking that’s the hardest part for me but Mary was very patient with me, she taught me again and again until I finally reverse park successfully after so many attempts. Finally when I took my first G2 road test I passed. Thank you so much Mary for your patience, time and effort. More power wish you all the best! God bless you! by Luz posted on Friday, May 10, 2013
Mary is the worst experience I have ever had to deal with. Aside from being a gossiping, extremely selfish creature, she is missing a hand from probably fisting her own mother. She pissed me off for the last time... On my last lesson I'm gonna spit in her mutated face. by FukMary posted on Monday, June 24, 2013

We all should send our complains against this "school" to the Ministry of Transportation E-mail: mtoinfo@ontario.ca asking the Ministry to revoke her license.
BTW, there were about 477 driving instructors whose licences were taken away recently. by Marc posted on Tuesday, July 23, 2013
